Desa Cattle Dairy Farm is famous locally as The New Zealand of Sabah. The vast expanse of green grassland with herd of cows grazing and lying around at the foothill of Mount Kinabalu make the place seems like it was overseas rather than our own homeland.
The farm is located at Mesilau, a 2-hours’ drive from Kota Kinabalu city. The 199 hectares farm has mostly Holstein Friesian cows which are the highest milk producers among all cattle breeds.
There are so many activities that you can do here. You can head over to the calf pen to see calves and young goats, and you are able to feed them. You can buy grass or milk to fee the calves and goats. If you come at the right day and time, you can watch the milk processing machine being operated. At 3pm to 5 pm, visitors can see the milking process through the big window in the designated area. Visitors also can see the cheese making process at their cheese cellar room at 10:45 am and 2:45 pm daily. The cheese is a recent addition to the products of the Desa Dairy Farm, which had just started in year 2015. This farm is said to be the only place in Malaysia producing cheese.
The one thing that you must not missed out when visiting the farm is trying their fresh dairy products. There are different flavours of yogurts, gelatos, puddings and fresh milks. You can even taste Malaysians’ favourite flavour (and fruit), durian flavoured gelato there. Besides durian, there are chocolate and vanilla flavoured gelatos; coffee, strawberry, blueberry and mango flavoured yogurt; and original, chocolate and the latest addition, coffee flavoured milk. Besides food, you can also buy souvenirs at the shop. T-shirts, key chains, postcards are sold at the souvenirs shop.
The picturesque green grassland, with the majestic Mount Kinabalu as the backdrop also attracts photographers from all over Malaysia to snap thousands of photos. Even some couples had their wedding photoshoot at the grassland, with a fee.
The farm is opened for visitors from 8am to 5pm daily, with entrance fee of RM5 per adult and RM4 per child or student. So, if you happened to visit Sabah in the near future, feel free to visit this cattle farm! Although it is quite far from Kota Kinabalu city, the trip there will be worth it.
